Mesopotamia, long known as the cradle of civilization, the birthplace of writing, holds a special place in the history of man. But how do we know it was the cradle? What is this First Look, as civilization and why is this place so special? The answer found in the art of temple where the pictorial representations are mixed with an early language to tell us just how this civilization worked, how it compared with modern times and how he became the precursor or prototype for future civilizations.

Mesopotamia roughly where modern Iraq is located, is not a country but a region. The word means "between two rivers", defining a geographic area where the water was the key to survival. The geographical area known as Mesopotamia was divided into four major states. These countries, Assyria, north, west of Babylon, Akkad to the east and south Sumer all took turns political clout in the entire region. To be more precise "the cradle of civilization was Sumer. Progress developed by the Sumerians was carried on over a thousand years by various regional powers, including the Assyrians and Babylonians. The Hanging Garden of Babylon became one wonders of the ancient world. Writing was first revealed at the time of 3500-3000 BC. This is crucial to our understanding because the people of Sumer, known as the Sumerians, displayed their mastery of writing many things, including the wall of the temple sculptures, statues and clay seals used to commemorate people and events. This thing has been significantly deepen our understanding. The simple style of pictographic writing was later replaced by Cuneiform, another gift from the Sumerians.

Most works Art comes from the Mighty temples, known ziggurat, built by the kings of the time. Some of the most famous are Ziggurats EREDU, Uruk, Nippur and The Great Ziggurat of Ur. They will provide an advanced culture for his time, helped by the passage of a hunter / gatherer to agriculture, pastoralism, the building and everything that follows in the wake of colonization.

Following are some examples of how art allows us to see in their lives:

Obviously they had written. Writing can be found on the walls, seals, statues and monuments.
They had a leader, a king, shown and described in the sculptures, murals, statues and clay seals. The king had a queen, proven to exist by archaeologists. They are proof of civil union and marriage. They were Awarded by the Governors and the reports of the king. This demonstrates civil structure. Ie government. They had a military arm demonstrating national defense (or offense). They had laws. King Ur-Nammu is known for having introduced laws against crimes of us recognize as violations today (like the Ten Commandments). They were penalties for breaking the law. In other words, they had the organization and structure needed for a large group of people to operate around like a big city.

Many objects are made of copper and bronze demonstration of advanced technology for their time. Scenes of hunting and military tanks show clearly demonstrate the wheel in action. They had the wheel. Musical instruments, wall sculptures, pottery, metalwork and language arts show. They clearly had a category of workers skilled artists, scribes and musicians. They had temples showing religion. They were mathematics and astronomy. Clearly this was no / hunter-gatherer group around scraping for survival. People now aspire to higher education and expression.

They had farms and crops. They plowed the fields and grew barley. Not only that, they had a system for allocating harvest for those who need food. They had a great community acting in unison for the common good. They had irrigation for the fields of drawing water Tigris and Euphrates. In other words, they had organized an operating system for supplying food to the population. They had towns and villages founded by people who had ceased to be nomads. A constant food supply is needed for this society to take root.

Mesopotamian art has shown us many things. You will recognize many elements represented on the temple walls as describing where you live today. You may not have your own military wing, but you have a place, a supply Food constant, a church, a local government, laws, punishment, punishment, art, music, writing, daily work, home, take you to work in your car, etc. Yes, Mesopotamia was the cradle of civilization and its history can be seen in his art.

One of the most unjustly underrated Italian operas receives a production that should help correct that attitude. Giordano’s music captures the acrid flavor of that movement, the cynicism of some of its leaders, and Chenier’s integrity and tragic fate. This production…
