The furniture industry has developed an entirely new segment of premium modular office furniture – and large Indian firms ticket diversify their product lines to address this area rich in species. Krishna Kumar Mangalam reports
Furniture industry in India is concentrated in the informal sector, with 85% of it from individuals, small and cottage industries. One study estimates the total size of this market at Rs 3.500 crore. On this, the market for office furniture in commercial establishments and accounts services sectors for Rs 1,100-1,200 crore, while the premium office furniture, or furniture design, has a market share Rs 400-500 crore.

From 2004, Wipro started making furniture and seating products market, and in 2009 it has invested Rs 100 crore in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in its Waluj plant in Aurangabad (Maharashtra). The furniture division is part of his care Consumer and installation of lighting on the Waluj and seeks to exploit the high-end clientele with measurement, international line of modular office furniture.
"We were already in products popularend and with this new facility, we enter the premium-end, designer modular furniture for offices. We will target the IT, ITES, telecommunications and business and the business segment for growth. Unlike other actors in this segment (which also export to U.S. and European markets), we focus on providing international quality designer products our customers in the Indian market, "said Parag Kulkarni, Vice-President and Head of Wipro Furniture.
Kulkarni said their latest range of products uses of steel, aluminum and MDF (medium density fiber) with a powder coating technology from Germany and the nano-coating rust ceramic is completely environmentally friendly.
The last PSU Wipro is "starting line", an electronic signature product, designed Tim Wallace, London-based furniture designer who spent two years monitoring the Indian market and interact with different end users.
"The Indian market is very exciting and the people here are open to ideas. Most top-end managers have worked in the United States and institutions European and who are willing to borrow and able to innovate on products. But in India, the design of office furniture is a great challenge because of climate considerations, and the market is very dynamic. I use a very high proportion of recyclable materials with steel, aluminum and polymer as base material – and 30% are recycled! StartLine is designed specifically for the Indian market. All furniture is modular and can be open bench panel based or configured for personal use of the cabin – and they can easily be swapped and reconfigured through these categories, and also upgraded to meet evolving needs, "explains Tim. A product of Royal College of Art, Tim has been in designing furniture for almost 30 years, with customers located throughout the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States.
